Merlin 4-H visits Truly Green Greenhouse
By: Cora Vince
The second meeting of the Merlin 4-H Perfect Planters was held on Saturday April 16th at Truly Green Greenhouse on Bloomfield Road in Chatham.
The tour started with one of the owner Hilco Tammings explaining how the tomatoes are grown by capturing the excess CO2 from the ethanol plant. Presently the greenhouse consists of 45 acres and employs 127 people.
We then saw the tomatoes growing on the long vines while the temperature inside was 26C but in-between the rows it was 20C.
The workers were busy picking and placing the boxes on automated delivery carts taking them to the packing area. In the packing area the tomatoes were packed in different sized containers to be delivered thru Mastronardi Produce all over Canada and the US.
Elliot Vince thanked Mr. Tammings for allowing us to go on the tour of the facility.
Members began the business portion of the meeting with President Ben Rhondes reciting the 4-H pledge and doing a roll call- what did you find of interest about our tour?
Minutes from the 1st meeting were read by Tamara Jack.
The next meeting will be in May. The meeting was then adjourned and the members enjoyed snack and social time.
