4-H Vet Club Visits Dairy Barn

The Hooves, Paws & Claws 4-H Vet Club held their third meeting on March 21, 2016 between 7-9pm at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. We started the meeting off at the dairy barns at University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus with the 4H pledge. We then listened to our guest speaker, Rob Reid talk about reproduction and genetics in dairy cows. He talked first about how you can breed dairy cows and showed us frozen samples of the reproductive system of a dairy cow. He then showed the group the tools that are used for artificial insemination and the canister of liquid nitrogen where they keep the frozen semen samples. He explained the steps that are taken to perform artificial insemination. Rob explained how different genetics can be chosen during the breeding process. To wrap up the tour, Mr. Reid showed us a dairy cow with a “window” in the side of her stomach to help with research and learning. He also showed us the tools that can be used to assist with the birth of a calf if needed. The 4-H members then gathered in the Agronomy Buildings for the remainder of the meeting where we answered our roll call question and watched a video of a calf being born. We ended the meeting with a snack and a drink and some social time. Our next meeting will be held April 4, 2016 at the home of our leader Marcia Vermey.
